LAYC Training Scheme


The LAYC Training Scheme has been setup to;

  • Recognise the commitment of many youth and childrens workers to training
  • Encourage the use of skills and knowledge from our courses
  • Keep records of participants achievements and completed courses
  • Give participants something they can use to prove their involvement in training

Courses


The courses in LAYC Training Scheme are grouped into three sections;

  • Practice courses - Ice Breakers, TOPS Activities, Games, Arts & Crafts, Challenging Behaviour, Drugs & Alcohol, Sexual Health
  • Policy courses - Child Protection, Emergency Aid, Food Preparation
  • Development courses - Risk Assessment, Fund Raising

As you complete courses you will move through the following levels;

  • Bronze – you will have completed 2 courses from any of the sections
  • Silver - you will have completed 4 courses with at least one of the courses from two different sections
  • Gold - you will have completed 6 courses with at least one of the courses from each of the three sections

Booking


As not all courses are available at all times, the first thing you should do is check the current training programme by clicking here.

To book onto a course which you can either book online by clicking here or by calling the LAYC Office (0131) 667 1828.

Places are usually restricted to 2 places per club initially, although reserve lists are kept if you want more places. 1 week before the course contact is made with those booked on the course to confirm their attendance and reserve places allocated at that stage if any become available.

Places on each course are usually £10 for member groups and £20 for non members. Only courses completed by staff and volunteers from member groups are eligible for the LAYC Training Scheme.

Attending


Each course has a sign in / attendance sheet.

We will email you after the course to confirm your attendence and to remind you of the follow up activities you will need to complete. Please make sure we have a current email address for you.

If you do not have a email address please make sure we have the correct postal address for your either your home or organisation.

Please note: Unfortunately because of the levels of demand and the subsidised cost, LAYC has to charge anyone who fail to attend training courses they have booked on if they do not contact LAYC in advance in time to allow someone else to make use of the place.

Completing


Once you've attended the course you will need to complete a small number of follow up activities relating to the content of your course. Each course has different activities that need to be completed.

For some of the courses (e.g. Games, Games, Games) you will be asked to let us know how you have put what your covered on your course into practise. On other (e.g. Child Protection) courses you will be asked to find out about your own organisations policies and procedures.

You will need to complete the online follow up form for your course which is submitted to LAYC. We'll have a look at your answers and if they're ok we'll send you your course certificate. And as you complete more LAYC Training Scheme courses you will get your Bronze, Silver or Gold certificate as well.

If you do not have a email address / internet access you will be able to complete a paper version which you will be able to get from your course tutor.

Summary


Here's the summary of how the LAYC Training Scheme works...

  1. You book onto a course either online or over the phone
  2. You attend the course - make sure you sign in & check we have your correct email address
  3. We'll send you an email that confirms your attendance
  4. You complete the online follow up activities for your course
  5. We check what you send in and (assuming it's ok) send you your course certificate
  6. If you've completed enough courses for either the Bronze, silver or Gold level we'll send you that certificate as well

Policy


Policy courses are run to support clubs and groups comply with legislation. Whilst the subjects are more formal the courses are generally run in practical and informal way.

Child Protection


This Introduction to Child Protection course challenges some of the common myths about child abuse and looks at how to manage a disclosure and minimising risks when working with children.

The course is suitable for anyone working with children or young people. You do not need any prior knowledge for the course but it would be helpful if you have had a look through your organisations child protection policies / procedures.

Content


The course introduces participants to physical, emotional and sexual abuse of children and how to respond to disclosures from children.

Through group activities, discussions and tutor input the course also introduces;

  • definitions of abuse and neglect.
  • how to manage a disclosure from a child or young person
  • minimising risk in work with children and young people.
  • the benefits of a code of practice for working with children and young people.
  • an introduction to the main legislation supporting child protection
  • an overview of sexual offences and the law.
  • safety on the internet.

Outcomes


By the end of the course participants will have;

  • Explored attitudes towards child abuse
  • Discussed neglect, physical, sexual and emotional abuse of children
  • Gained a basic understanding of child protection procedures
  • Gained confidence in managing disclosures of abuse
  • Gained an understanding of the law in relation to the protectionof children
  • Discussed minimising risk when working with children

Emergency Aid


This Emergency First Aid course leads to the Health & Safety Executive Recognised Emergency Aid Certificate. This is the minimum acceptable standard for First Aid at Work.

The course is run on behalf of LAYC by Fred Harrison of 1st Aid People Trainers.

The course is suitable for people without any experience of first aid or simply wanting to renew their existing certificate.

Content


The course content is a mix of discussion, video and practical work (students are asked to consider style of dress appropriate for participation in practical activities).

A course handout and writing material will be provided as will all equipment required for the practical work.

The aims of the course are;

  • To understand what is expected of a first aider
  • To handle any first aid emergency
  • To maintain appropriate records and first aid equipment

Outcomes


On completion of the course participants will have;

  • Gained sufficient understanding of their roll in a first aid emergency
  • Demonstrated their ability to adequately perform the duties of a first aider
  • Obtained contact numbers for assistance should the need arise

Follow Up


An Appointed Person First Aid certificate will be given to all participants for succesfully attending course. For inclusion into the LAYC Training Scheme you must also complete the follow up questions on ths page.

Practice (1)


Practice courses are generally at an introductory level courses suitable for all children and youth workers. The courses cover activities and topics that you could use with your clubs & groups. Courses are informal with lots of practical activities and ideas.

Course have been split into 2 sections;

  • Practice (1) - Ice Breakers, TOPS Activities Games, Games, Games & Arts and Crafts
  • Practice (2) - Challenging Behaviour, Drugs & Alcohol, Sex & Relationships

Ice Breakers


Knowing and being able to use Ice Breakers is a great way of getting groups to work together and help intoduce issue related sessions. You can also use them for a bit of fun with your groups and clubs.

This course is aimed at sessional and volunteer youth and children’s workers. Particularly those who have little experience in using ice breakers in their work.

Content


The course will provide a theoretical background to using ice breaking techniques and an opportunity to experience a series of ice breakers tailored to and for particular situations.

  • Be able to determine when best to use them
  • Be aware of a range of ice breakers that can be used in different situations-

TOPS Activities


TOPS Sports sessions use the contents of the TOPS Sports bags to show you how to run fun and easy sports & activity sessions. This is a fun practical workshop full of ideas for games, sports and activities.

This very popular course is suitable for everyone - but be prepared to join in!

Content


The course is very hands-on so you'll need to be ready to take part in a variety of games, activites & sports. The course covers games that can be played by a wide range of age levels and are suitable for;

  • Small groups
  • Big groups
  • Whole clubs and groups

The course uses the contents of TOPS Activities bags which can be borrowed from LAYC.

Dress in a suitable way for playing active games - that means trackies, old jeans, t-shirts, trainers …that sort of thing!!!

Outcomes


On completion of the course participants will;

  • Have experience of running TOPS sport & activity sessions
  • Be aware of the importance of safety when running sport & activity sessions
  • Be able to use existing club / group resources to run sport & activity sessions

Follow Up

Games, Games, Games


Games, Games, Games.Let your mind freefall through games old and new. Look at the resources your club has. Learn how to make do with a group of kids and your imagination. A fun practical workshop full of ideas for games requiring no equipment, some new street games as well as games that have been around for many years.

This always popular course is suitablefor everyone - but be prepared to join in!

This course is (usually) run by Jim Balloch of Spark in the Dark on behalf of LAYC.

Content


This practical course will allow play and youth workers the opportunity to take part in and discuss a variety of physical and team game activities suitable for use in play and youth work settings.

The course is very practical with group activities, discussion and tutor input.

The aims of the course include;

  • To demonstrate a variety of active, physical and team games that can and have worked in play and youth work settings
  • To allow participants to explore ways in which these activities could be used in their settings
  • To look at ways of how activities can be adapted to suit the needs of particular groups and/or individuals

Outcomes


By the end of the course participants will have;

  • Gained an understanding of the type of physical / team activities that can be undertaken with children and young people
  • Demonstrated their ability to run an activity with fellow participants
  • Be aware of a range of games that can be used in different situations
  • Gained an understanding of the play / youth workers role in making these activities work in their settings

Arts and Crafts


Arts & Crafts projects can be cheap, easy to set and fun for all ages. Bits & Bobs Scrap Store will show you how to have a fun (and creative) time running arts & craft activities for hardly anything.

The course is aimed at sessional and volunteer youth and children’s workers who are looking to use scrap materials for basic arts and crafts sessions.

Content


The course will be practice based and provide opportunities to create basic arts and crafts models using a range of scrap materials provided by Bits and Bobs. A limited range of scrap materials will also be available for sale.

The course is very practical with group activities, discussion and tutor input. Arts & Crafts can get a bit messy – so wear appropriate clothes.

Outcomes


By the end of the course participants will;

  • Be aware of the Bits and Bobs Scrap Store and the materials it has available
  • Be able follow a basic design and create an arts & crafts model
  • Be aware of the environmental benefit of using scrap in arts & crafts
  • Have had experience of participating in arts & crafts activities
  • Be able to run an arts & crafts activity for children or young people

Working with young people has its rewards and its challenges. How do we maintain and develop our relationships with young people, and our self-confidence when challenges arise? Can we / should we avoid confrontation? This workshop is an opportunity to explore challenging behaviour in youth work and look at strategies and solutions for dealing with it.

Development courses are more advanced courses for developing your club or group. Whilst the subjects are more formal the courses are generally run in practical and informal way.

Risk Assessment


This course is an introduction to Risk Assessment suitable for full time, part time, sessional and volunteer youth and children’s workers. It seeks to outline the key components of Risk Assessment in a practical way in order to encourage and support safe and productive youth and children’s work.

The course is run by LAYC staff.

The course is suitable for people without any experience of risk assessment however knowledge of your own groups risk assessment policy would be useful.
