About LAYCLAYC is the largest non-uniformed, voluntary sector youth and children's work organisation covering the City of Edinburgh, East, Mid and West Lothian areas. LAYC has 143 affiliated groups; 14,854 children and young people and 1,275 adult staff. Our AimThe aim of the Association is to "promote the benefit of children and young people in the City of Edinburgh, East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian areas, without distinction of political, religious or other opinions, by associating the local authorities, statutory bodies, voluntary organisations and inhabitants in a common effort to advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and other leisure time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for children and young people in the area of benefit, and in furtherance thereof" Our Objectives
Organisational StructureAt present LAYC has 3 full time staff under the leadership of our Director. We have 2 staff posts (seconded from Community Education - City of edinburgh Council) and a full time senior administrators post. The Management Committee has responsibility for the appointment and managing of the Association staff, the securing and allocation of funds and resources and the development of its work in accordance with its constitutional aims, legal obligations and informed by the needs of its affiliated groups. Our PhilosophyThe organisation believes that its role as an umbrella body for youth and children's work should include providing advice, information, support and training to local groups who directly provide a well balanced programme with a wide variety of physical, creative and aesthetic experiences which encourage the personal growth and development of the children and young people involved. The organisation believes that all children should have access to youth and children's work programming and no single type of provision or activity should be allowed to dominate or monopolise resources. Historical BackgroundLAYC can trace its origins to The Edinburgh Federation of Girls Clubs in the 1930's and probably originated in the period immediately after the First World War when a number of similar organisations (Boys Clubs, etc) were formed. Through the 1950's and 60's the organisation became mixed clubs and thereafter youth clubs and through the 1970's and 1980's moved totally from the realms of well meaning amateur involvement from mainly middle aged and middle class ladies to an agency with a professional youth work staff effectively managed by an informed voluntary committee which worked closely with the relevant local authority education departments in promoting and developing youth and children's work. The constitutional purposes of LAYC were reaffirmed in 1997 as being "to advance education and to provide facilities in the interest of social welfare for recreation and other leisure time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for children and young people". |
